Landscapes
The illustrations you’ll find on this page were created by referencing a photograph of the scene on my computer and freehand drawing the image piece by piece in a variety of pens/markers. I continue to add layers and details at both micro and macro levels until I feel like I’ve brought it to life in my own visual language.
I find myself enjoying this method most for exploring texture and depth in a scene. I’ve come to learn that within the (sometimes strict feeling) box of black & white, it provides the perfect setting for the freedom to find a way to translate these things as the restrictions cause you to push what you think the possibility for depth and texture are.
The Morocco Series
Shortly after graduating university, I joined the Peace Corps and moved to Morocco for 27 months to serve in the Youth Development sector. On December 1, 2017 I moved to what would be my home for the next 2 years, a small mountain village on the spine of the High Atlas. Talat N’Yaacoub is an Amazigh village about 2 hours south of Marrakech on the border of the Souss-Massa region. Depending on who you ask, people will say there’s anywhere between 800 and 7,000 residents - most of whom are sprinkled throughout the various valleys and cliffsides that sprinkle the Tizi n’Test. Because of my village’s remote location, I also often found myself in Tahannout, a large town at the base of the High Atlas.
This series came about as a way for me to give thanks to the friends, family and members of the communities that I spent most of my time in. I tried to find views and content that I felt the recipient would resonate with and to some degree represented our relationships.
